The History of Oberle Meats
Joseph Oberle started his meat market in the 1870’s. His specialty was a German bologna, later known as Oberle Sausage. Joseph’s meat market, located on Main Street in Ste. Genevieve, was the first meat shop in the area to have refrigeration.

The tradition continued with Joseph’s sons William, Fred, and John Oberle. They worked for their father at the meat market. William the oldest son did the slaughtering. Fred Oberle opened a meat shop in another part of town. John, the youngest of the three, opened a combination meat market and restaurant formerly known as the “Flash” located on Highway 61 in Ste. Genevieve. At the time, Highway 61 was the main road between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau and the business thrived.

William Oberle’s son and third generation, Andre Oberle, slaughtered and made sausage. His son Jack Oberle bought a neighborhood grocery store operated by Andre’s brother Damion Oberle in the late 1950’s.

Fourth generation Jack Oberle applied for USDA inspection which enabled him to sell his product throughout the region. In 1976 Jack’s Market moved to its present location at 21529 Highway 32 in Ste. Genevieve. Jack and his son William (Bill) continued to operate and expand the business until Bill purchased the business in 1991.

Today, Bill and his two sixth generation sons, Stephen and Adam Oberle, are the present owners and operators of Oberle Meats, Inc. Together they continue to produce Oberle sausage using many of the techniques handed down by their ancestors.

Bill and his sons continue to expand and develop new products.  By focusing on cost reduction though technological advancements, they have managed to make the sausage much more efficiently than past owners.   Oberle Meats ships worldwide via UPS and has a truck driver that delivers to various retail shops throughout central and southern Missouri.  Oberle Sausage is a registered trademark and produced solely by Oberle Meats, Inc.
